Continuing from episode 80’s Big UK stammering meet up, I’m back on Skype chatting with Pam and her friend Sheila. These two online friends recently met in person for the first time. Shiela also wrote an interesting guest post on Pam’s blog describing a few aspects of what it feels like for a woman to stutter. We chat about PMS/PMT’s effects on female stutterers, the feeling of being a mother of a stuttering child and the differences in perspectives on stuttering between men and women. As I did for Pam and her friends in episode 80, I also ask Sheila what went through her mind when meeting Pam, Tone and Lisa for the first time.

Remember way back in episode… um… well, about this time last year when I had Greg Snyder on my show? He’s a University professor who once in a while asks stutterers to come in to his class for a Q&A session. It’s a great chance to give future speech therapists the inside story on what if feels like to stutter and all the goodness and crappity crap that comes with it. I connected with Greg’s class over Skype and here it is in all it’s mp3 glory.

On today’s show, I share a recent epiphany-like event at a Korean grill restaurant. Yes, epiphanies can occur anywhere ;) Namely, stuttering with confidence. Stuttering without recoiling from social punishment despite the weird looks we get. Then the following night, I had a mind-blowing conversation about this with fellow stutterers on Twitter. Together, we shared how rewarding it is to stutter with confidence. I share some of the tweets from that conversation below:

…I guess you could say I use my stuttering to my advantage; a social filter. I’ve got no time for snobbish standards.

My advice: I don’t MAKE the time 4 standards. Don’t like my stuttering? Plenty of other people on the planet to make friends. Kthanxbai.

Also, it’s the confidence that attracts people. That and shared interests, connections.

Stutter & react like a wimp, then you’ll be seen as one. Stutter & react with confidence, people see you in a positive light.

You’ll get there. For me, it was getting positive feedback and rising above the negative. It ain’t easy. You’ll get knocked down

On today's show, I share a recent epiphany-like event at a Korean grill restaurant. I share some of the tweets from that conversation below:

...I guess you could say I use my stuttering to my advantage; a social filter. I've got no time for snobbish standards.
My advice: I don't MAKE the time 4 standards. Don't like my stuttering? Plenty of other people on the planet to make friends. Kthanxbai.
Also, it's the confidence that attracts people. That and shared interests, connections.
Stutter #38; react like a wimp, then you'll be seen as one. Stutter #38; react with confidence, people see you in a positive light.
You'll get there. For me, it was getting positive feedback and rising above the negative. It ain't easy. You'll get knocked down
THAT'S IT! Having control. Not of your speech but of your rejection of societal norms.

THAT'S the root of getting confidence. Being in control #38; rejecting societal expectations.
Exactly. You know your self-worth. Exude it. Man, they should teach this in speech therapy.

@stirpicus To quote Demetri Martin: "Stuttering's not a disability, it just adds drama and suspense to any conversation!" ;)

I also talk about a new website I started up called Ti-Ger.org. I hope you can join in on the fun :)</itunes:summary>

In contrast to everything I talked about on episode 56 about letting your stuttering out and just do it, we ponder a dilemma Robert is facing for an upcoming convention where stuttering just may not be appropriate. Yes, it’s easy to say there’s room for stuttering everywhere— and there is— but certain circumstances may be an iffy.

I was interviewed on the fantastic Just One More Book! podcast produced by Mark Blevis and Andrea Ross. They had a call for art submissions for their Love of Reading Gallery and mine was entitled Now This One. I talk about how I came up with the idea, how I drew it and my thoughts on digital art and what stops me from using my iPhone as a sketchbook. You can listen to the interview here.

This is stuttering link #32 because I hardly stutter my shows. Reason being that stutterers usually stutter a lot less when speaking by themselves. So this is a great opportunity to hear how I usually stutter on my high-stuttering days. Yet I still get my message across. Stuttering doesn’t prevent you from communicating effectively ;)

I already chose a character for the quack. “Idiot” is a character I created years ago when I worked at a design firm. Fast forward to today, he is the perfect character to represent the junk science about stuttering.

Here’s what I came up with for my Anti-Quack character who, as you’ve most likely guessed, is the scientist who actually does research and keeps up to date on stuttering knowledge, etc. Inspired by (and slight caricature) you-know-who and his podcast ;)

I still need to refine him. Perhaps thicker pencil strokes will do the trick.

A previous version of anti-quack:

Here’s a sneak preview of an upcoming character I’ll be introducing (once I get off my arse, that is!) in a very near future comic. This stutterer will be totally cool with his stuttering and will play a role in bringing Franky Banky to accepting his stutter as well. At the moment, his name is Chess until I can find a better name (if any). The final Chess is at the bottom.

Yesterday, my eye caught on this gem, Your Choices Determine Your Happiness, by Keith Harrel.

Keith is a professional speaker and a person who stutters. Thanks to a fantastic teacher and terriffic mother, Keith learned at a very early age the importance of having a positive attitude about his stuttering.

"My mother taught me then and there that attitude is a choice. When I told her I couldn’t go back to school, she listened and understood what was contributing to that negative attitude. She was able to listen to the pain that fueled my fears and humiliation. She then gave me the opportunity to choose a new attitude.

You have choice. You can accept an attitude of humiliation and fear or you can take on an attitude of action. You can be a victim or a victor. You can let life run you over or you can take it on"

I highly recommend this read and I also recommend you sign up on Twitter if you haven’t already done so and follow Greg.
It’s hard living with a stutter. Even harder that stuttering isn’t understood. Today’s episode focuses on 2 of the many downsides of stuttering. First, I give a little bit of a rant about the perception that people who don’t stutter seem to have about people who do stutter. Despite what we tell them. In the second half, I talk about something that’s been going on stutterwise with me lately. I’m just too tired to talk. What is causing this and most importantly of all, how can I prevent it?

First, I give a little bit of a rant about the perception that people who don't stutter seem to have about people who do stutter. Despite what we tell them. In the second half, I talk about something that's been going on stutterwise with me lately. I'm just too tired to talk. What is causing this and most importantly of all, how can I prevent it? </itunes:summary>

I’d also like to hear your new year resolutions, too. Continuing with the new theme, I talk about the new redesign (finally it’s up!) of this very website, stutteringiscool.com. All recorded on my way home at 3 a.m. New Years’ Day. You’d think I’d be stuttering up a storm at that hour!

Here’s a video of a CBS news clip about stuttering from the CBS website. It talks about the struggles and pain of stuttering through clips of people sharing their experiences at the National Stuttering Association’s annual conference. I can relate to each and every single one of them and wish I was able to attend. there is something fantastic that always happens whenever I hear other stutterers talk about the same experiences I went through (hence, my podcast!). Note the various professions these stutterers have despite their speech.

Sorry, there’s a 15-30 second ad at the beginning and the sound is only one the left channel for some reason.
